Media Training 101: What Every Executive Should Know Before Going Live

You’ve landed a live interview—congratulations! But before you step into the spotlight, ask yourself: Are you ready to make headlines for all the right reasons? Whether it’s a national TV appearance or a quick segment on the local morning news, media moments can skyrocket your brand’s credibility or unravel it in seconds. The difference? Preparation.

Here’s our GYC crash course on how to show up with poise, polish, and purpose:

  1. Know Your Key Messages

Before any interview, pinpoint the three key messages you want to get across. These are your talking points—everything you say should connect back to at least one.

Insider tip: Use bridge phrases like “What’s really important is…” or “That reminds me…” to gracefully steer the conversation back to your message when needed.

  1. Practice, But Don’t Memorize

You want to sound sharp, not scripted. Rehearse with a media trainer (yes, we do that), record yourself answering curveball questions, and get comfortable thinking on your feet.

Remember: If you cling to a script, you’ll freeze the moment something goes off track.

  1. Watch Your Body Language

Nonverbal cues speak volumes and can make or break your credibility. Sit up straight, smile naturally, and maintain eye contact (or look directly into the camera if you’re virtual).

Insider tip: Avoid fidgeting, crossing your arms, or glancing off-camera—your audience will notice.

  1. Don’t Fall Into the “No Comment” Trap

If you can’t answer a question, don’t clam up. Instead, explain why and redirect: “I can’t speak to that detail right now, but what I can tell you is…” shows transparency without spiraling off message.

The bottom line: Transparency builds trust—even when you don’t have all the answers.

  1. Be Authentic—But Stay On Brand

It’s okay to show personality but remember you’re representing more than yourself. Make sure your tone and delivery reflect your company’s values and voice.

Rule of thumb: Authenticity wins hearts, but consistency wins trust.

  1. Know the Medium

A podcast interview and a 3-minute TV spot require different strategies. Tailor your energy, pace, and language to fit the format.

Insider tip: A media pro can help you adapt your delivery for every platform.
