Networking to Grow your Business: How to be Successful

Networking. It’s something that every professional knows is important. Some people are better at it than others, but everyone knows they must do it to be successful. However, networking is not only important from an individual career-building standpoint, but it’s also critical for the success of your overall business.

Networking helps to establish your image as an expert in the marketplace so the businesses that need your products or services now or in the future will remember to contact you. In the world of social media, networking with business growth in mind also means that you are reaching not only those professionals you actually meet but their connections as well. Here are a few tips on networking to grow your business.

* Listen. In order to make your products, services and expertise valuable, you have to understand how they relate to others’ needs, problems or pain points. To effectively do this, you have to learn to listen. As you network, you’ll want to ask questions and engage with others to understand what others are seeking. Only then will you have an opportunity to share your potential solution.

* Help; don’t sell. Scrap that canned sales pitch. At networking events, everyone is trying to sell something: a product, a service, themselves. Unless you make real connections, the sales pitch will be ignored. As you are talking with people, think about how you can help. Be genuine and honest and if a real opportunity presents itself, you’ll be much more likely to engage in a successful business relationship.

* Stand out. Here’s where creativity and uniqueness are critical. If the networking event is large and many people are meeting many others for the first time, it’s easy to become part of the big blur. Think about it from the receiving end of things. If you engage in dozens of interesting conversations in one evening, how many do you remember? Come up with an interesting anecdote, saying or story so you will be remembered. Perhaps you have a memorable opening introduction or an unusual business card that ties into your conversation. Make them remember you.

* Get organized. To avoid the networking blur, you’ll want to find some way to keep your contacts straight, updated and in order. Check out apps available to help you manage who you spoke with, what you talked about and when you need to follow-up.

* Capture the momentum. For those prospects that are hot, move quickly. If you promised answers, information or a follow-up meeting, get on it immediately the next business day. Send a thank you e-mail, a message on social media or whatever information you promised. This continues the conversation in a less rushed, more measured way.
