Understanding Your Target Demo and Strategically Marketing to Them

Defining a target audience seems like it would be one of the first things a new business or product team would do. However, in many cases, this target audience is not well-defined upfront, and as a result, an effective marketing plan is much more difficult to put into action. Here are some key things to remember:

Research First

It’s perfectly acceptable to jot down traits of your target audience first, define what they want, and identify where they get their information based on personal knowledge. However, be sure you challenge and check your own assumptions with research before moving any further past this point.

You can either use existing research or information provided by industry and market experts. You may want to conduct your own studies to refine and hone your ideal target audience.

Get Demographic Details

Once you have a well-researched and well-defined ideal customer and target audience, you want to get into the nitty-gritty of their demographics. In the addition to things like gender, age, income and geographic location, you’ll want to understand where they shop, how they buy, where they get their information, and what social media outlets they read and watch.

Be Short, Clear and Succinct in Your Message

Everyone experiences information overload these days, so you’ll want to make sure you pare down your message to one, short key sentence that sets you apart from your competition. You’ll want this message to be a primary part of your branding. All your communication should revolve around this central siteskin.

If you have trouble reducing your key message to one point, talk with an outside business partner, friend or marketing agency to help get a fresh perspective.

Build Relationships

Once you understand who your target audience is and where they get their information, work on increasing your presence in their lives, whether it be in social media outlets or what they read in print. Serve them, work on relationships and help them address their needs.
